The German budget airline “Germanwings” will start operating from the 2nd of May on a route from Riga to Cologne. It will operate flights on this route three times per week (Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays). There were no direct flights to Cologne before that. Flight tickets for a trip from Riga to Cologne are now available on the company's homepage www.germanwings.com.
The 3 millionth passenger of Riga International Airport is Gita Neilande a resident of Latvia. She flew into Riga Airport today at 12:55 from Berlin Schoenefeld Airport on an easyJet flight. The flight number of the 3 millionth passenger is EZY 4593.
In eleven months of this year VAS Starptautiskā lidosta Rīga (SJSC Riga International Airport) has transferred 82% more passengers than Tallinn Airport and 83.4% more passengers than Vilnius Airport.
In gratitude for participation in the successfully realized Schengen convention financial programme (Schengen Facility) project, today the State Border Service awarded Riga Airport Chairman of the Board Mr Krisjanis Peters with an honours badge “For development of the Latvian state border”.
On October 8 32 people donated blood in the airport. The employees of State Blood Donor Center (Valsts asinsdonoru centrs (VADC)) express their gratitude to “Riga International Airport” for a successfully organized donation day and thanks to all blood donors.
The number of passengers handled by Riga International Airport in October features the fastest growth in the Baltic States. The number of passengers increased by 27.1% in the ten months of 2007 compared with the same period in 2006, while Tallinn and Vilnius had 11.5% and 15.2% increase respectively over the same period.
On Thursday, November 8 from 11:00 to 15:00 “Riga International Airport” in cooperation with State Blood Donor Center (VADC – Valsts asinsdonoru centrs) has arranged blood donation day. In the airport’s short-term parking-place P1 (by the terminal) specialized bus is arranged. The employees and guests of “Riga International Airport” as well as the employees of other companies and institutions located in airport’s territory will have a chance to donate blood.
Since October 28 “Riga international Airport” offers six new destinations. Airline “Ryanair” will open new flights to two more destinations during the next few days – to Bristol in Great Britain and Shannon in Ireland, but in January to Bergamo in Italy.
In 10 months of 2007 “Riga International Airport” handled 2 664 556 passengers, thereby in October the number of passengers exceeded total of 2006. In October 2007 the number of passengers using airport’s services increased by 31% (more than 296 000) compared with October 2006.
